Protect Against Wildfire Smoke by Creating a “Clean Air Room”

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. — Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) and Santa Barbara County Public Health Department encourage Santa Barbara County residents to plan for poor air quality conditions caused by future wildfire smoke. Smoke and ash from wildfires contain very small particles known as particulate matter. These particles harm the lungs and heart, and can cause coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, nausea, and in severe instances, premature mortality. People with heart or lung disease, seniors, kids, and pregnant women are especially sensitive to smoke.

The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) has prepared an annual air monitoring network plan for the county. The plan includes a statement of the purpose for each air monitor, and evidence that the siting and operation of each monitor meets the requirements of the federal regulations.

Range Improvement Burn in Los Olivos Scheduled for June

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Fire Department has tentatively scheduled a range improvement burn at 4155 Figueroa Mountain Rd in Los Olivos with a burn window of June 10-11. The goal of this two-day burn is to provide live fire training for the certification of instructors to teach CA-219 Firing Operations class. This class is used to teach both firefighters and private land managers to use fire as a tool to both fight large-scale wildfires and manage prescribed fire being used as a land management tool. Prescribed, or planned, fires typically burn less intensely than wildfires. Prescribed burns can help prevent the spread of wildfires, and can reduce impacts to watersheds that can result in soil loss and sedimentation.

TRAK Environmental Group, Inc. and Ecotech Environmental Corp. have applied to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) for a permit to operate a High Vacuum Dual Phase Extraction (HVDPE) system with carbon adsorption controls to remediate contaminated soil at a former printer processing facility located at 526 Laguna Street in Santa Barbara. The location of the project is within 1,000 feet of the property boundary of La Cuesta High School and Alta Vista Alternative High School, both located at 710 Santa Barbara Street in Santa Barbara.
