2025 Clean Air Grants for School Buses

Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) has grant funds available for school bus fleet expansions with zero-emission buses.
Successful projects will be eligible to receive a grant within a range from $10,000 to $250,000. Actual grant amounts vary on several factors, including but not limited to: usage, cost-effectiveness, emission reductions, eligible project costs, and fund availability.
- Priority will be given to projects located within disadvantaged communities, as defined by this map: SB 535 Disadvantaged Communities.
- The District has final discretion on how grant funds are prioritized and distributed.
Project Requirements:
- Applications are limited to one (1) grant project per public school district with final determination at the District’s discretion.
- The zero-emission school bus must be new.
- The engine in the new school bus must be CARB certified for sale in California and must comply with durability and warranty requirements.
- At least 51% of the total annual usage must occur in Santa Barbara County.
- Fleet must be compliant with all local, state, and federal air quality regulations and must not have any unresolved Notices of Violation.
- School buses must meet the requirements of CARB’s most recent Lower Emission School Bus Program.
How to Apply:
- Determine your project’s eligibility for this program. To be eligible for funds, projects must meet the criteria in CARB’s most recent Carl Moyer Guidelines, Chapter 4 and Lower Emission School Bus Program Guidelines.
- Gather the required information about your new vehicle and engine.
- Apply for grant funds in person, by mail, or email.

Additional Funding Sources & Information for Cleaner School Buses
Individual public schools or public school districts that are Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) customers may be eligible for rebates under 3CE’s Electric Bus Program. 3CE rebates are eligible to be stacked with Clean Air Grant funding if all program requirements are met.
Funding for zero-emission trucks and buses is available through California’s Heavy-Duty Vehicle Incentive Program.
