Santa Maria Regional Landfill

The Santa Maria Regional Landfill is located east of Santa Maria on the south bank of the Santa Maria River.  The landfill has been in operation since the 1950s.  Anaerobic decomposition of the waste in the landfill generates landfill gas, which is primarily a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide.  A vapor extraction system collects the gas and routes it to control equipment or the cogeneration plant.
