South Ellwood Field

Platform Holly is located off Coal Oil Point near Goleta. Oil and natural gas from Platform Holly are sent by pipeline to the Ellwood Onshore Facility. At the onshore facility, the oil, natural gas and water are separated. Oil is treated to remove hydrogen sulfide, stored on-site, then sent to the Plains Pipeline for transport to refinery. Water is injected into an on-site disposal well. Natural gas is dried, treated to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, compressed, then sold to the local utility company. Two wells at the nearby Beachfront Lease are associated with the stationary source.

Eleven Global Shipping Companies Slowed Transits in 2017 Program to Protect Blue Whales and Blue Skies

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect whales today announced results from the 2017 program and publicly recognized the 11 shipping companies who participated, reducing speeds to 12 knots or less in two regions. For the first time the program included speed reduction zones in the San Francisco Bay Area in addition to the Santa Barbara Channel region. The voluntary incentive program started July 1 and ended November 15, 2017. The recognition ceremony, hosted by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, is taking place today at the Bannings Landing Community Center near the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach.

Health Effects of Ash and Dust

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. —  The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District today reflect on continuing health effects of the ash that fell during the Thomas Fire and the health effects of dust from the drying mud of the Montecito mudslides.

Figueroa Mountain Pile Burn Schedule for Late January-March

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Los Padres National Forest has tentatively scheduled a Prescribed Burn at Figueroa Mountain by the Pino Alto Day Use Area with a burn window through March 1. The goal of the series of one-day burns is to reduce the risk of wildfire. Prescribed, or planned, fires typically burn less intensely than wildfires. Prescribed burns can help prevent the spread of wildfires, and can reduce impacts to watersheds that can result in soil loss and sedimentation.

Air Quality Watch Cancelled for Santa Barbara County

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Today, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District cancelled the Air Quality Watch that was in effect due to impacts from the Thomas Fire. Air quality throughout the county has been good-to-moderate for several days and the Thomas Fire is nearly fully contained.

Air Quality Warning Downgraded to Air Quality Watch

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District have downgraded the Air Quality Warning to an Air Quality Watch. Air quality has improved significantly over the past several days, although areas could still be affected by winds stirring up ash. The Air Quality Watch will remain in effect through the weekend and Monday holiday.
