SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Fire Department, in conjunction with UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration, has tentatively scheduled a one-day Prescribed Burn at UCSB Lagoon near Campus Point with a burn window from August 6 through August 10. This one-day burn is part of ongoing management effort to control non-native grasses and establish native bluff scrub vegetation. Building on successful past burns, this treatment will be conducted on a day within the burn window with the least amount of fog in order to generate enough heat to reduce the viability of the non-native seed bank, and on a day with the best conditions for dispersion.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District and Santa Barbara County Public Health Department encourage residents to be proactive and plan for poor air quality conditions when wildfires occur and smoke is present. The smoke and ash from wildfires is made up of very small particles known as particulate matter, or PM, which can cause health issues, especially for children, seniors, pregnant women, and people with heart or lung conditions.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect whales today announced the launch of the 2018 incentive program, which will start July 1 and end November 15, 2018, with voluntary vessel speed reduction (VSR) zones in the Santa Barbara Channel region and San Francisco Bay area.
The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) has prepared an annual air monitoring network plan for the county. The plan includes a statement of the purpose for each air monitor, and evidence that the siting and operation of each monitor meets the requirements of the federal regulations.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District announced today that it is seeking community input on air quality concerns and projects to reduce diesel exhaust pollution, as part of a new state initiative called the Community Air Protection program.

Platform Holly is located off Coal Oil Point near Goleta. Oil and natural gas from Platform Holly are sent by pipeline to the Ellwood Onshore Facility. At the onshore facility, the oil, natural gas and water are separated. Oil is treated to remove hydrogen sulfide, stored on-site, then sent to the Plains Pipeline for transport to refinery. Water is injected into an on-site disposal well. Natural gas is dried, treated to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, compressed, then sold to the local utility company. Two wells at the nearby Beachfront Lease are associated with the stationary source.
