Prepare for Wildfire Smoke by Creating a “Clean Air Room”

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — In recognition of September as National Preparedness Month, Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) and Santa Barbara County Public Health Department encourage Santa Barbara County residents to plan for poor air quality conditions caused by future wildfire smoke. The smoke and ash from wildfires is made up of very small particles known as particulate matter, or PM. These particles can harm respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and children, seniors, pregnant women, and people with medical conditions are especially sensitive.

Prescribed Burns at VAFB Scheduled

VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. — The Vandenberg AFB Fire Department has been scheduled to conduct two different series of prescribed burns before the end of 2019. The goal of these burns is to reduce the risk of wildfire. Prescribed, or planned, fires typically burn less intensely than wildfires. Prescribed burns can help prevent the spread of wildfires, and can reduce impacts to watersheds that can result in soil loss and sedimentation.

Notice of Public Review and Comment Opportunity

ATC Group Services, LLC has applied to the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) for a permit to excavate and remove approximately 135 cubic yards of soil contaminated by a former oil well located at 3030 Caselli Way in Santa Maria.  Excavated material will be loaded on trucks for transportation offsite to a State-approved disposal facility.  The project site is within 1,000 feet of the property boundary of Valley Christian Academy, located at 2970 Santa Maria Way in Santa Maria.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (District) is recruiting to fill one position on the District Hearing Board. The Hearing Board is a five-member quasi-judicial body that makes determinations on permit appeals and variances from local District rules and regulations, and considers requests for permit revocations and abatement orders.
